THE ROAD TO TODAY'S “PARTILHAR” MAGAZINE

It all began in the 1980s when members of the Alcoholics Anonymous community in Portugal began considering the idea of publishing a newspaper. The tradition of newspapers, bulletins, or magazines within Alcoholics Anonymous communities started in the United States many years earlier with the international publication "AA Grapevine." One of the founders, Bill W., contributed numerous articles, some of which were later published in books or pamphlets, such as "The Language of the Heart" (1st edition, translated into European Portuguese, and presented at the 2nd International Convention and 10th National Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous of Portugal in Braga, October 4–6, 2024, with the same theme). The AA Grapevine was Bill W.'s primary means of communication with the AA community. At that time, other AA communities, including those in England, Ireland, France, and Brazil, also had their own newspapers, newsletters, or magazines.

In Portugal, a group of AA members began producing a bulletin in a very artisanal manner, using resources from two members with journalism backgrounds. The first bulletin, titled “Porta 32,” was published in July 1988. The name referred to the door number of the building where AA meetings in Portuguese began, located at Travessa do Corpo Santo, No. 32, 1st floor, Lisbon, behind the Corpo Santo Church.

The second issue of the bulletin came out in July 1989, and the third in 1990, but under a new name: “A Partilha.” “A Partilha” had three more editions in 1992, with the last issue published in August. The publication ended due to internal controversies. In 1996, a survey among AA groups revealed that 98.7% of members found a newsletter to be “indispensable” or “very important,” with 135 members pledging to subscribe. Consequently, in April 1997, a new newsletter was started, titled “Post Box 4331,” named after the post box number where AA correspondence was received, at a time when there was no fixed location for the Community office. This bulletin had a No. 0 issue that outlined its goals and editorial direction.

From 1997 until 2002, bulletins were published quarterly. In July 2002, the newsletter was renamed “Share,” and 99 issues were published by the end of 2024. Under the tagline “Our Printed Meeting,” "Share" has undergone several changes but has consistently focused on publishing contributions from members sharing their  “EXPERIENCE, STRENGTH, and HOPE.”
